We have been warning for more than a year of the danger of fossil fuel extraction in the Weald. Now Cuadrilla Resources wants to drill at Balcombe. Experts have said that if anything is found, extraction will be by fracking, a method banned in many countries due to questions over its safety.
To make things worse, Cuadrilla is headed by Lord Browne, whose career has hardly been a great success. His old company, BP, was fined $50 million after an explosion at Texas City killed fifteen – Browne’s ignoring of safety problems, and his cutting of ‘red tape’ designed to keep workers and the environment safe, was held at least partly responsible.
Having resigned as a result of being caught lying to a Court, Browne was brought in to produce a report on higher education that followed the neo-liberal template and was therefore equally acceptable to New Labour and Tory alike. The result has been a huge drop in numbers applying to university and the probability that several may go bankrupt in the next few years.
Joining Cuadrilla, Calamity Browne then started work ‘fracking’ in Lancashire. This triggered several earthquakes in quick succession.
Greedy, dishonest, right wing- if Browne makes his way down here then we should give him the reception he deserves.
